Why is everything said to be done at length.

Edited to add more: for a book which supposedly has class consciousness as a core theme it is very sneering of the working classes. This, along the creepy storyline of a TA dating a much younger student, made finding out the author is a university professor very unsurprising. The cliche! I guess those are nitpicking notes, but it was also a quite boring book.
