Read this one for book club and I am veryyyy conflicted about it; it’s not something I would ever have picked up on my own and I was super confused for the first few chapters. I think there’s a lot to be learned from the messaging and I’m still trying to unpack a lot of it, both regarding cult behavior/belonging and societal obsession with appearances, but I am not a body horror girly and the visuals were a lot for me at times. The story structure is mostly what kept me going because once I knew what happened I wanted to know how we got there.

This was quite easily the strangest novel (and maybe the worst editing) I've ever read. There's lots here to shock even the most jaded gorehound- the worshiping of physical deformities, terrifically vulgar turns of phrase, and even (maybe?) incest- but the novelty wore off quickly. I flew through some parts and struggled during others because I was really apathetic toward 95% of the characters. Even if I can't decide what I thought of it, I'll be thinking about it for a long time. Three and a half stars... probably.
