This is my favourite book of all time. Carnies, engineered sideshow freaks, a megalomaniacal cum preacher flipper man, an albino hunch backed dwarf, siamese twins separated at the hips, Fortunato the chick, the kinetic, its enough to make a person breathless.

Apparently Dunn spent 10 years writing this book and it shows, every sentence is poetry, the story finely woven, the imagination, astonishing. She sucks you into the world of the Binewski family traveling circus and you don't draw breath until its over. You know something deeply terrible has happened but you keep reading with hope that its something minor.

There is only one Geek Love. Like the first taste of a drug, you will never get as high as the first time you read it, but it will haunt you forever. Magical, wonder, the wide eyed speechlessness of a child. Do yourself the favour. It will ruin fantasy fiction or any kind of fiction for you forever though, nothing is as good as Geek Love.

Loved the writing, the oddness, the utter originality. But the ending didn't offer any resolution and actually left me regretting the time I spent in the world. But a memorable book I'm glad I read all the same.

I have had this book on my shelf for about a decade, and I think my taste has changed a lot since then. The hints at child abuse and invest in this story so far really turned me off of it.

I.. don’t know what I just read. It’s like a circus horror film mixed with the idea that it might be real life and everyone has really messed up ideas about life and living. There’s also a very disturbing cult that comes out of this? Also incestual love on a level I couldn’t really stomach? It was weird man. I can’t recommend it unless you’re someone who really really wants to get weird with their reading.

Al Binewski, carnival proprietor, spawns(with the enthusiastic assistance of his wife and a range of pharmaceuticals) his most successful attractions. The sideshow might lure you in, but you'll stay for the deft handling of the Binewski family dynamics, the brilliant writing, and the incisive (but never heavy-handed) social commentary. It's easy to see how Geek Love inspired writers like Monica Drake and Chuck Palahniuk, and their quirky Northwest aesthetic.
