I'm not quite sure what I just read, but I could not look away. Not for the squeamish, and more than a little shocking, but hypnotic for sure.

I tried and failed to read this last year because I just couldn’t get into this but then I found the audiobook. If you’re a reading purist then I’d get over it for this book. The voice actress, Christina Moore, presents this more as a radio drama than as a book. Each character has a distinct voice and even when the dialogue doesn’t indicate it, you can tell who’s speaking based on Moore’s spectacular performance. She brings this fantastical story to life and does it so well she deserves a writing credit.

The story itself is fascinating and intriguing though honestly it doesn’t make that much sense to me. Maybe I’m not smart enough to understand what Katherine Dunn was saying. I was completely enthralled by the characters and their interactions. I don’t want to spoil this because it’s just such a crazy story but if you check this out make sure you listen to the audiobook. It’s the superior version.

Stunning and captivating, this book is an excellent read. The premise, while creepy, is fascinating and the story is alluring and compelling, making you really think about beauty and tragedy, fate and free will. I'm late to the party on this one but I highly recommend it if you missed it when it came out almost 30 years ago.

This is intense. I put it aside for a bit, but now I'm back and hooked again. Mesmerizing.

Wow.

One of my favorite books, ever. Told from the POV of the albino-hunchbacked-dwarf middle child of a family of carnival freaks, the story is complicated and beautiful. I have read this book over and over for 15 years and loved it every time.

DID NOT FINISH: 76%

I don't care about these characters..Well that's not true, I care a little bit about Oly's daughter, but it's been about half the book, and she hasn't reappeared. I don't care enough to keep slugging along on this. The writing style doesn't do it for me. There are parts where it seems like the author has something to say, but then it just gets lost and doesn't deliver.

As part of my dark and creepy phase, this book kept me oozing with taboos. I think it's a good read if you're into strange and macabre reads.

This is one of my all-time favourite novels. I first read it maybe 20 years ago and it made such a strong impression on me that I was worried about re-reading it for fear that I might not like it as much. I finally re-read it this year and loved it even more. I will definitely re-enter the world of this strange and dark novel again, and I won't wait so long to do it next time.

Continued to think about it long after finishing. Very interesting and strange…
