This was truly one of the weirdest books I’ve ever read. Wildly grotesque in a variety of ways.

Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

i loved the concept of the book. i loved the backdrop of a family traveling circus freak show.

but i felt like there were way too many characters. the pacing seemed to drag in parts (ahem, arty’s cult) and seemed too fast in other areas. it simultaneously kept me interested and unsatisfied.
adventurous dark funny mysterious medium-paced

One of my all time favorite books. The story of a self made sideshow family with some supernatural elements and an exploration of the darkness of human nature and desire.

Wtf did I just read (audiobook)
This book had potential to be interesting but it left me feeling like I wasted my time. After finishing it, I had to read a synopsis just to make sure I didn’t miss anything (it was hard to decider between plot and over described fluff.) The synopsis I read was accurate to what I thought I had read so that made me feel better knowing I didn’t really “miss” anything. After reading another review for this book, I feel confident in my 2 star rating. The only reason I give it a 2 star is because I actually finished it. However, I think the only reason I did finish it is because it was for a book club. If I didn’t have that purpose, I would have given up before even diving into book II. Will NOT recommend this book to anyone.

A strange and grotesque peek into the lives of a family of carnies, the book itself recreating the morbid fascination that exists between the carnival "freaks" and their audience. Dysfunctional family dynamics, religious cults, murderous power struggles, and abilities both superhuman and supernatural, Dunn does it all and her characters and their choices will stick with you long after you finish the book.

Wonderfully weird. This is the type of book that is meant for annotations and unpacking. Not a single thing was held back in this funny and explorative work
