+ enchanting and spellbinding
- hate the title

The premise is very interesting. The safety of a tight-knit community versus the strict boundaries of the community. The pursuit of extreme deformities of the physical body parallels the extreme deformities of the relationships between the characters. The former causes one to cringe in guilty pleasure during the first half of the book, and the latter causes one to cringe in disgust in the second half of the book. The book does start to peter off after the first two acts, where the style seem to completely change. The kinetic story-telling came to a scrambling halt, slowly replaced by the languid style of a suspense.

If the blurb doesn't make you want to read this book IMMEDIATELY then I can't help you. This book is simple, complex, ugly, beautiful, absurd and utterly charming. You won't find anything else like it.

This book revels in obscenity. It is an odd ride.

Who doesn't love carnies?

This gets 2 stars, mostly because it's just not my taste. I am not a fan of, nor am I remotely entertained by torture or disfigurement by torture. This really doesn't classify as "torture," but in my opinion, follows that sickly, "let me entertain you by describing mutilation" avenue. It's not too much of he book, but it's there, and I'm just not into it.

Slow, didn't love the split timeline

Really well written but once you get past the initial shock of the story, it totally lacks substance
