STOP! YOU RIGHT THERE. I encourage you to read this because you don't want to miss out on this amazing novel!
Before you read further, make sure you check out my full review on Colleen Hoover's blog tour, October 4th at www.novelthrillsandchillsreview.com
After reading strictly crime thrilling novels for a whole year, this was such a REFRESHING read that I needed. I have been a Colleen Hoover fan for last 2 1/2 years. Her first novel I read was Confess. Upon reading that book, she put me under her spell. I spent the next several days, weeks, and months binge reading all of her novels she had published back then. Along the way I have purchased every physical copy and have my own shelf dedicated to her.
I was so excited to read Without Merit when I found out she wrote a new novel but not as excited as when I finished it. This book is hands down my most favorite one she has written. I have never felt so many emotions in any other books than a Colleen Hoover book and this book hit all my feels. I laughed, I became angry, I sympathized, I cried, and I was thankful. This will be a book I will recommend over and over again.
I do want to warn readers though, without giving anything away, you will read about depression and you will read about anxiety. I personally have never had depression symptoms but I've definitely have had bursts of anxiety. I loved the way the book referenced each of these mental health issues and how they handled it as a family. It broke my heart in so many good ways.
I know some of you may now be thinking that this is going to be a dark read that may put off readers. I'm here to tell you now that it's not. Even though it touches on some dark issues, it is a light read that will have you falling in love with the Voss family.
Without Merit was a face paced, captivating read and I encourage any Colleen Hoover fan to pre-order this book NOW! If you have not read a book by her yet, please choose this one to be your first. You will not regret it and if you do, well this will be a subject we disagree on! :)
It is so hard for me to sit here and talk about a novel that I am going to deem as my most favorite of 2017 and not talk about the characters and give away spoilers. This is a book I wished characters were real life because I would surround myself with these people to not only learn from them, but to learn how to love with them.
Well done Hoover.
This book publishes October 3rd but you can pre-order now!!
Thank you to Atria Publishing for providing me with this advanced readers copy, and thank you to Colleen Hoover for bringing out the ugly cry in me once again! It was an absolute joy to provide my honest thoughts on this novel.

Really enjoyed this one! I love the message behind their broken and imperfect family and just how big of a toll that can play in someone’s life.
I attempted to read this when it was first released in 2017 and I think this was when I started to realize that I had grown out of Colleen Hoover books. It was boring. The characters were bland and dumb. Meh

Ok... Let's do this.
This book is a hot mess. Do you hear me? HOT. MESS.
And the worst part is it started off okay? I hated Merit pretty much from the beginning, and I found the family interactions to be... less than realistic, but I thought it was an average read. For a while.
But after finishing? I didn't even like enough about this book to do a true "parts I liked" segment. Seriously.
I felt like there was a lot of potential to develop Merit from a pretty terrible person into a less... terrible person. She had depression, she felt alone, I can relate to that. I really wanted to see her grow. And some of that was done, with the suicide attempt and her realizing she needed help. But mostly?? No.
And you know why? Oh, you know why.
Bc this book is fucking packed full of social issues it's trying to take on! Syrian refugee crisis, mental health, sexuality, you fucking name it and it's basically in this book. (Okay, I'm exaggerating. Slightly.) I just felt like it had the potential to be a decent book about teenage depression but instead it chose to be a terrible book about literally every social issue known to man. The end felt so rushed and preach-y and it didn't give each issue the time and attention it deserved. We got, what, 3 paragraphs on the Syrian refugee crisis? Max? And what, exactly, did that add to this book? It's not a central part of the plot, it doesn't get resolved for the happy ending, nothing happens with it, so why shoehorn it in there unless the point was to get as many social justice points as possible?
Ugh, this book just frustrated me. Writing this review was frustrating bc I had to think about this book.
TL;DR - read this book if you need a three-paragraph, mediocre, preachy rundown on all your fave social issues.

3/5/18: How did this get so bad so fast? Small rtc bc I have Shit To Say about this !!
