I would rather recommend The Vanishing Half by Britt Bennett - this reads far more like a YA novel than the latter - the writing isn't as solid, but the story is interesting though see content warnings.

I found this book to be a very interesting character study of what one event can do to completely change the course of people’s lives. I liked the aspect of the Mothers having an almost omniscient voice sprinkled throughout. Overall it wasn’t spectacular, but it was still emotionally moving and intriguing.

“She had never said it out loud before. There was something freeing and admitting that you had been loved less. She might have gone her whole life not knowing, thinking that she was enjoying a feast when she had actually been picking at another’s crumbs.“

What a beautifully written, tragic parallel between these two women’s lives. Brit Bennett has wowed me twice, now.

I have a lot of thoughts, particularly pertaining to the church culture, as I have been in church my whole life, but thing about this book that I believe will stick with me the most is the startling lack of empathy. How painful.
