This was an easy read in terms of language and number of pages. The story was easy to follow and captivating enough to keep me going. Really love novels that just explore some characters’ intertwining lives for a number of years.

Bennett does an amazing job creating real, flawed characters that feel like someone you could have known in high school. There is a lot of growth and change in the characters, but there is also a stagnant sort of trait to them that comes with being a person. They make choices that make you groan and sometimes you feel happy for them—it’s a whole cycle.

I think this book was an interesting dive into how older folks view the next generation, the intersection of race into education and religion and bodily autonomy, how one act could weigh on someone so young. There’s a lot going on within The Mothers, as there is with life, and it definitely has me thinking about several different things.

I enjoyed the twists of life and the overall the nosiness of the so-called Mothers who acted as an accidental catalyst of events towards the end. And I must say—the last lines of this book is so killer I’m obsessed I put down the book and kept thinking of the connotation for a good while after.
