I stumbled upon this audiobook series on Libby. I'm a Harry Potter fan, so another story about Nicolas Flamel caught my attention. It's fast paced and interesting. Excited to listen to the next book!

Oh thank god a mediocre book.

It's sort of funny reading the reviews here, people acting personally offended because the main characters were unlikable, the writing was simplistic, the plot was "derivative"--y'all, it's a children's book. I read this when I was like 10. I'm not saying it's impossible to genuinely enjoy children's literature, but the writing is going to be simpler, and the characters aren't going to be convincing. You don't need to like The Alchemyst—I didn't!—but just try not to tear it to pieces for the qualities definitely aimed at children.

The characters were pretty boring, the plot propulsive but a little scattered, and the writing was simple—and I loved this book when I was little. Will I be reading the rest of the series? Maybe. I'm definitely going to read Book 2, because I'd like to read the whole series (I never finished it, because I couldn't get my hands on the final book until I'd forgotten everything that happened), but if I keep going and I'm not getting anything out of it, besides moments of, "Oh, yeah!" then I'll stop.

I thought the plot was kind of cool, and I think it could have gone far. But, I really didn’t like the characters and I agree that there was way too much shoved in one novel. It just didn’t feel like a coherent structure. Also, why give a character an awesome name of scathach and then call her Scatty? 1, kids aren’t dumb, 2, whether it is scat or scattered, not good connotations.

Who knew that Nicholas Flamel was a real person? I'm reading the series with my 8-year old and he's enjoying it.

An absolutely excellent read. I cannot wait to read the next in the series....so well written and such compelling characters.
