Tension filled and tropetastic!
TROPES: Age Gap, Stern Brunch Daddy, Bodyguard Romance, Grumpy/Sunshine, Only One Bed, Forced Proximity, Class Difference
Based on the tropes I've listed above you can see this book has all the goodies. Phoebe is the blind sister of a Duke and Captain Trevillion is her bodyguard. After multiple kidnapping attempts the two go on the run to keep Phoebe safe and end up having a very sexy roadtrip. If you love a stern older hero this is definitely the book for you!

I was excited about reading Captain Trevillion and Phoebe's story. It did not disappoint.
Captain Trevillion is the most devastating hero of the Maiden Lane series. The one liners of longing and yearning were killer. And I loved that he adored her for her personality, not because he wanted to care for her in her blindness. Also, I LOVED that Phoebe had a disability and was still a very multifaceted character. MORE OF THIS PLEASE.
Loved them. Loved this series. Not sure if I care enough about the other characters to buy the rest of the series right now. Besides, I need a break from historical romance for a bit.

3.5 stars. I enjoyed this story and how fierce and independent Phoebe is. Sometimes the pacing was a bit weird, but it was definitely an adventure!
I liked Phoebe and James together. They made a beautiful couple and their character development was good.
I didn't understand much about the whole kidnapping attempt or the purpose. It got them together, so whatever.

Another solid historical, with well-fleshed characters, interesting plotting, diverse sex, and unremarkable chemistry. Yeah, we're in a bit of Romancelandia when it comes to plausibility, but stringent historical accuracy is not why I read romances. I enjoy the mixed-class romances, even as I'm a little, "...really? Reeeeeeeally?" about it all.
Spoiler
And, yes, I'm still here for the Duke of Montgomery, who has that merest soupcon of Lymond/Wimsey air, i.e. blond fop who hides behind appearances to outsmart everyone, and I am definitely looking forward to his book, which makes me all the more impressed that Hoyt goes as far as she does in making him legit villainous. He saved the day a bit in the previous book, even after being all ominous and control-y, but here he is outright the source of bad things that happen to the protagonists. I wouldn't be surprised if there ends up being a deeper motive we find out in his book, but in the meantime, I'm kinda enjoying him being exactly as ruthless as the story tells me he is. So often characters are described as ruthless and manipulative and heartless, but their actions don't back it up. Yes, yes, I do not advocate kidnapping and forced marriage in real life, and I tolerate it from this character in part because I'm fairly confident in some sort of redemption arc, but in the meantime it's an awfully fun read.
✨Simply put, if you are a bodyguard, guard her motherfucking BODY.✨
So I started this one not thinking in the slightest that since it’s Phoebe’s book, we would get more of Maximus

Amazing book. Phoebe, the sheltered, blind sister of Maximus; the Duke of Wakefield is chafing under his protective restraint. Always vigilant, his caution increases as her sight decreases and eventually disappears altogether. Enter Capt. Trevillion. Proud, controlled, and recently retired from the King’s Dragoons due to a horrific leg injury. He comes into Maximus’ employ as Phoebe’s personal guard and grows to respect, admire and eventually love her. It was so exciting to see Phoebe’s story arc. Her realization that Trevillion meant more to her than a jailer keeping her in her plush prison. That he intrigued, infuriated and intoxicated her. Her fight to break through his reservations and concerns was wonderful to read. Their sojourn in Cornwall was the best part of the book as it showed James as the man he was and Phoebe as the woman she could be.
