Really good story within a story. At times it was a challenge to keep up with the characters. The storyline had me all in. Family history. Becoming a mother can increase maturity and the courage to know and understand your own mother.

I finished this and I am giving it four stars.
In this book we are following two main characters, Sherry and Dumpling, her mother. Sherry is trying to get to the bottom of an incident that took place in her childhood by asking her mother to accompany her on a road trip where they discuss their family history for Sherry to write a book about it.
It really kept my attention, I love the way it was written. The story has dual timelines happening and I will say there is a lot of the horrific truths of slavery depicted in this book. I’m not sure that I expected that but it really illustrates generational trauma, deeply embedded in our DNA in different ways it might manifest.
The personalities of the more current timeline characters comes through nicely, especially Dumpling. I loved her character…
Why not five stars? Well I think the ending was just a little bit abrupt. Although I understand why the ending was like it was I would’ve liked to see more of the relationship between Sherry and Dumpling.
I really want to read more from this author.

I have loved all of Bernice McFadden's books. This one is no exception. The story goes back and forth between present day and slavery times(describing how their family came to be). Sad, funny, and true. It explores the relationships between family, mothers and daughters, and the secrets they keep.

So I am give this a 3 because I want to try to be some what far. But I didn't really care for the book.
So I listen to this book in a audio format. In the beginning I thought I was going to really like it but at some point in the back and forth I got lost. In reading some of the other reviews it could have been my fault idk but I just not a fan of the back and forth in a story or multiply stores taking place in one story.
