This was the first of this trilogy that I ever read. Having the context of the first book definitely helps make this one make more sense, but even so, I read it with fondness each time.

While Mennoly is enjoyable to read about, there's not really enough going on in Dragonsinger to make it distinct from Dragonsong aside from being in a slightly less depressing setting. To make matters worse, in a certain sense Mennoly actually has *less* independence than she has in the previous book — while she spent part of Dragonsong in a cave with her fire lizards, "tuning" as she pleased, in this book she has given up that independence to the people in her new home in the Harper Hall. So much of the book involved her dealing with other people's whims (both good- and bad-intentioned) that it was hard to see Mennoly herself at times.

These aren’t perfect. But gosh the pacing is fun and she gives you just enough time with the characters to love them. A cozy series for sure.

I wish I had found Menolly when I was younger. I cried about 4 times over the course of her first two books. Like I enjoyed the first 2 books of Pern, but her story, so far, is special in a way I did not anticipate.
