This art work was absolutely stellar and so much of this story felt so resonant to being a teen.

This is more of a 3.5 for me.
I feel a bit confused with the ending. I don’t hate how it ended, but it felt unfinished and abrupt. Honestly though, my biggest gripe with this graphic novel was the lettering. There was SO MUCH on almost every page that it was hard to read sometimes. The panes needed to be bigger and sobeit if the book was longer because of it. I think it would have helped the storytelling. I liked the characters mostly. I liked that they weren’t perfect and they were all different. Loved the representation!

Well, that was something.
Forest Hills Bootleg Society is about 4 friends who stumble across a risqué anime movie and then burn it and sell the copies to the students at their Private Christian school.
It is also about the struggles of friendship and being a teenager.
Honestly, this book is nothing like I expected it to be. The plot was very slow and there is not a ton of action or tension on the page. It’s mostly about the characters back story and exploring their feelings.
Unfortunately, I didn’t really like any of the characters in this story. They 4 main girls were pretty shitty to each other, which I guess is real but not enjoyable to read about.
There was also a ton of text and background for side characters that were in one scene.
I like to read graphic novels as an easy transition between genres or when I don’t really know what to read and want to get through something quickly. This had so much text it was almost hard to read and made the pace feel very sluggish.
The ending was so abrupt, for how slow the plot seemed to move along the story wrapped up in only a couple of pages which left me feeling disappointed.
Also, there are a lot of mentions about church, religious guilt, youth group and homophobia so if any of that bothers you I would steer clear of this one.

It's 2005, when we could burn CDs and DVDs on our computers but we weren't at the Spotify and Pandora realm of things yet. You got bootleg DVDs of stuff you couldn't easily find at your video store, like anime. There's always a chance that what you order isn't what you actually get. Four friends who feel like outcasts get a copy of a racy anime and realize they might be able to make some money by selling it at their Catholic school. Hidden tensions within the group erupt one night at a party, and things are never the same.
This book doesn't have the most uplifting ending, but it has one that feels very real. I'm concerned about one of the characters, Brooke.
