4/5 ⭐
3/5 🌶️

 Tropes
- grumpy sunshine
- touch her and die
- brothers best friend

 📖 My Thoughts
I probably would have given this book five stars had i not been currently halfway through the second book which IS SO MUCH BETTER. so the second book kinda ruined me a bit lol. But I still love a good grumpy sunshine book. I find that it’s the trope I can relate to the most because I get a lot of comments that I’m a sunshine type character and my favourite form of self harm is emotionally unavailable men 🤷‍♀️. I liked the added bit about Ava having a fear of water and I found that I related to her PTSD as I have had a traumatic experience (unrelated to water) but felt like I had experienced what she did. I could not put this book down and I’m excited for the rest of the series!

 ⚠️ Triggers
Drowning, suicide, overdose, self harm, vengeance, killing, death, guns, poison, sexual harassment

🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️Representation
Female MC is Asian. MMC is first generation Ukrainian immigrant. Beyond that not much else representation detected but I’m white so take this info with a grain of salt.

 🌶️ Spice
The spice was thereeeee. It was good but it also gave off the vibes that it was a vanilla couple that was like “oh I use handcuffs I’m so kinky!” There was kinky sex but it wasn’t KINKY if you know what I mean. Like the spanking and orgasm control.

 📝 Special Notes
My library has the audio books free to download an unlimited amount of times so maybe check to see if that’s the same for y’all!

This series has been on my list for a little while. I didn't care for the narrators of this story (the woman's voice is very high pitched and the man's voice is oddly deep. Other than that, the story was  intriguing and intertwined. I love the true opposites attract/friends to lovers trope, and also that Alex Volkov has gotten involved with the Chen family based on the belief that their father killed his entire family. Alex becomes close to Ava's brother and then close to Ava while he has to look out for her. They begin a relationship of sorts, and Alex is seemingly very keen on protecting Ava, but he is certainly a morally grey alpha male type (not that this bothers me necessarily, lol). We learn in the end that Ava's father tried to kill Ava multiple times (she was not his biological daughter) and was not involved with the Volkov murders. Alex's uncle orchestrated the killings, which he finds out towards the end. To keep Ava in the dark and protect her, Alex lies to her about loving her and pretends to be on his uncle's side. This essentially ruins the trust in their relationship, and even after the kidnapping, Alex pretends not to love her and lets her move to London. He eventually does go back to her, but it takes some coaxing from her friend, and once he moves to London, Ava makes him work VERY hard to gain her trust back (which made me happy, I didn't want her to just take him back after all he put her through!). Finally, after about a year as friends/acquaintances in London, Alex sings a song for her at an art show. It was kind of romantic, but not really in Alex's character. The only thing was that he never sang in front of anyone (although he was a good singer), but he would sing for her. After this, they make up. I think overall, this was a very good story, and it captured my attention. The smut was also very good.

This is a difficult book for me to rate because there were some aspects I really liked and others that really put me off. Overall I found myself more interested in Ava's backstory as well as Alex's. I was pleasantly surprised to have a bit of a thriller aspect to this book, but thats where the positives end. The romance was... not really there. The interactions between them were forced consent (which isn't consent), so it was hard to read. Alex's whole demeanor is toxic which can be fine for a grumpy/sunshine trope, but there wasn't anything redeeming about him.
