A few interesting ideas doesn't save this from being interminably dull, tropey, and more or less a waste of 600 pages of reading time. Glad I borrowed it from the library

Okay, i lied. Well, actually i just changed my mind. I said after reading book 6 of the Sword of Truth series that i was done. No More Ayn Rand propaganda for me. Nope. But i relented for just this one single book.

The reviews for this book were almost universally positive, and not a single word about politics or capitalism or socialism, so i took a chance. It was a good move. This book is a return to the Terry Goodkind i loved in the first 4 books of The Sword of Truth. (Book 5 was very mediocre and book 6 was a travesty).

This book is a prequel. It goes several thousand years back into the past before the events in book 1 and tells us the story of The First Confessor and also the creation of the Sword of Truth. It's a good story. I do agree with some of the other reviewers, that Goodkind seems to repeat himself far too often, and the writing is a bit sloppier than books 1 - 4. However, it's still a great story which fills in some great background and will completely hold your interest from beginning to end. Oh, and the narrator does an OK job. Much better than some of the male narrators in the first 6 books, but she falls a little short of being truly excellent.

Great origin story; it really set the foundation for the entire series. There were a few sections that really took some time to get through, but the wrap-up was worth it.

Abandoned after 116 pages.

As fondly as I remember the first few Sword of Truth novels, and as much as I will be forever grateful to Goodkind for the Confessors and the Mord-Sith, this is a boring and repetitive prequel that doesn't really add anything new. It's not even really about the creation of Confessors, which is what I was hoping for.

I'll just wait for the mass market edition of Siege of Stone to drop in September to rekindle the magic.

My love for The Legend of the Seeker tv show lead me to Terry Goodkind. I talked myself out of reading this book because of the length. I am dumb! This book was amazing!!!! Please do yourself a favor by reading this book. Dive deeply into the making of the first confessor!!!
