Let’s start this review for “Twisted Games” with some necessary warnings, shall we? Unless you like a sexually explicit story with very dark overtones then don’t read any further (this review or the book). This is a dark reverse fairytale romance that essentially “The Princess Diaries 2” meets “The Bodyguard” meets “9 1/2 Weeks” where the bodyguard is a brooding dark soul suffering from extreme PTSD with over the top, bordering on dangerously toxic, possessive tendencies and a penchant for light BDSM. Still here? OK then…
Firstly, I think Ana Huang deserves props for her ability to spin a good yarn because despite all the dark toxic traits that she seems to delight in giving her MMC’s, this book, just like the first in the Twisted series was kind of a fun read. Her writing style is well developed and she manages to create characters that are pretty well fleshed out with interesting back stories. Add to that some pretty decent banter that had me laughing in places and off the chart chemistry… let’s just say that her books are not boring even if the tropes she uses feel a bit worn.
My issue with her books is not with the off-the-chart spice, which is at least 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ and full on 🔥 or her extremely explicit, hustler worthy spicy time dialogue. It comes down to the toxicity of the MMC (though I will admit that Rhys Larsen is practically a tame pussycat compared to Alex Volkov). In this case, Rhys’s unholy possessiveness that takes the “touch her and die” trope a touch too far. His character kind of left the impression that he could turn at any time and even though there is a certain, shall we say, titillation to be had from the danger of the possessiveness trait, for me that is a red flag. Add to that the danger of the BDSM play without discussion or limits… yet another no-no. But then again, if that is your bag, then more power to you and no shame should be attached to enjoying that kind of thing (and there was plenty of it to be found here).
As with the first book, despite the multiple toxic traits, the plot and banter were just enough to keep this an entertaining read despite my not being able to give it a higher rating.
