A (very) short story that nudges you to think about how we measure the relative values of different lives, and what happiness is worth. I liked the poetic plot twist and the allegory. But I didn’t vibe with the little-girl-with-cancer trope. It felt too formulaic and the kind of shortcut that writers less talented than Backman reach for in an attempt to make people cry.

I like the abstract concepts in this book as well as the way Backman uses different perspectives. Such a touching set of novellas!!

This short Christmas story is trying to be a tear-jerker, but I didn't quite connect with it emotionally. It just felt like it was trying too hard without offering anything genuine.

Very short story--really too short to even call a novela--half the pages were illustrations (I love illustrations. I wish more books had them!) Sweet story. Very much in the style of Backman's other short books.
