i'm not normally a romance reader, but this one got me into it. pride month is coming up, so i'm wanting to read some queer (particularly lesbian) books, and this was the perfect start.
the writing style was a lot more tell than show, and it seemed very amateur. plot makes up for that though, and i'm on my way to starting the second in the series.
definitely recommend to pick this one up. had me giggling and kicking my feet.

Just . . . meh. I had somewhat high hopes for this book after I read the synopsis. Plus, within the first few chapters, it was very clear that there was an homage to You've Got Mail going on (right down to the name of the dog) and I love that movie, Tom Hanks's later manipulation notwithstanding. So it had a lot going for it.

I was glad when the homage wrapped up pretty quickly, because I was afraid the whole mystery crush thing would last the entire book, which would have been a drag. And I really did enjoy the initial uncertainty between Rosie and Jane about whether they could be in a relationship or not. I actually thought Rosie was being pretty reasonable in trying to set boundaries. Unfortunately, that conflict was quickly overcome and then we get a lot of Rosie and Jane IN LURRRRRVVVVVVVEEEEE. Which, again, not too bad, but it really seemed to go on and drag without much of a point, except to show us that they are totally hot for each other all the time. Then, out of the blue, you get the third-act breakup which felt so forced and unnecessary. Again, meh.

The writing also felt a little simplistic and juvenile at times. Not every action needs to be explained, not every like/dislike needs to be told to us. Just let the characters be.

Overall, some bright points, but the pacing was off, the conflict felt forced, and the writing couldn't make up for it.

It was okay. But it also made me side with a landlord/property developer and that ruined my morals.

Read Between the Lines is a fun, cute and (mostly) enjoyable lesbian romance. I would recommend it to any super-fan of the romance genre- or anyone looking for a cute pride read. However, it also did secure my opinions and issues with contemporary romance as a genre.
Rosie and Jane get together way too soon which means the middle portion - filler cute relationship goals and slow plot advancement - goes on for a bit too long. Which is fine and enjoyable if the characters and sub-plot are strong enough to grip the reader but for me, they weren’t. And it was mostly Rosie I’m not going to lie. Jane was fine and even quite enjoyable, but Rosie’s moral compass really started to get on my nerves.
As well as strong main characters, a middle filler section really needs that supporting cast to bounce off of the main cast and help push the narrative. And whilst Jane somewhat had this with her sister and family, Rosie didn’t. Her roommates all felt like the same character and it was hard to tell them apart. There was also way too many of them to remember - which is fine if they only show up once BUT they are returning characters.
They just needed something a little more defining, which I think is just generally what this book needed in general. But I do have to commend this book for its enjoyability and also any book that is willing to stifle a review out of me deserves some praise.

The third act breakup annoyed me ( as usual ) but mostly due to my anti-rosie feelings. Hashtag love you Jane.
