WOW. I almost never have the same if not better feelings about the second books in a series. I'm sure all of you have heard of or experienced what is known as the "second-book syndrome"? Where the second book takes a slight dive and doesn't bring out the same reactions in a reader as the first one does? WELL. This book definitely is not prone to that syndrome because it was a breathless and capturing read. I'm still not sure how to sum up my feelings entirely because my thoughts are all over the place right now, and I mean this in the most positive way possible. There was a significant improvement in all aspects of this book, including plot, narration, and characters. All I can say is, this second book made a bigger impact on me than the first one in the series, and that's a first. You can definitely tell that Miss Dittermore put a lot more effort into this book to make it the flawless piece that it is.

The second book began a little after where the first one left off. Right when Brielle thoughts her life was getting better and she might get a moment of piece, her life went straight downward. Her dad starts to drink again and decides to see new people, and she realizes her boyfriend Jake is keeping things from her. Ever moment she's with him, he acts like he's angsty and afraid of something and Brielle can't tell what it is that's bothering him. Not only does she have to face these problems, but every night she's haunted with nightmare which slowly tear her apart. Brielle struggles to keep her life, which is hanging on a thread, in check but this isn't easy to do when everything bad seems to be spiraling at you. It also doesn't help that when you finally think you've put a stop to all the madness which surrounds you, trouble seems to find itself back to you. Brielle's life takes a turn for the worse as old friends and family get distant while new ones want her...literally. Pair all these with new truths and shocking secrets, and Brielle's in for the flight of her life. The question being, can she fly with broken wings?

I really enjoyed reading this book because it kept my interest all throughout it with its fast paced and flowing dialogue. Brielle and many of the other characters were written to perfection, and I felt like their problems were sometimes mundane enough to connect with them, which is very important when it comes to characters. Brielle really captured me and made me empathize with her in the first book, and she kept me doing the same in this book with the on-pour of different problems which seem to love making a place in her life. Her relationship with Jake, although tumultuous at times, goes on strong as they face each of their problems with faith in their relationship. One of my most favorite aspects about this book, and this series as a whole, is how it tackles the big topics in life ranging from freedom to fear. The books have a way of raising up big questions and really make you think about life in general. I guess you could say, the aspect which I'm talking about could be termed as philosophical.

In general, I felt like this was a great follow-up to an on-the-rise series by a very talented Shannon Dittermore. She combines twists, romance, and action into a very thought-provoking series which will cut deeply into you. Her writing is powerful and charming, leaving readers with an endless need for more. It goes without saying that I am definitely looking forward to the next installment, Dark Halo.
