What a triumph! I'm seriously looking forward to everything Kika Hatzopoulou publishes from hereon in, because this is a standout YA eARC this year for me, up there with âWarrior Girl Unearthedâ in terms of originality.
Hatzopoulou has hit the balance just right between the inclusion of existing mythology and independent world-building (we get the biggest injection of classical Greek mythology here, but other culturesâ myths and deities are also included). I honestly couldnât pick holes in Hatzopoulouâs magic system. Certainly not after Iâd reached the novelâs conclusion. There's a scene just at the climax, when the last few details of what really happened during the riots twelve years ago are revealed, and the remainder of my questions about the magic and the societal hierarchy were finally answered (so do hold on till the very end).
There are mind-boggling layers upon layers of plot development in âThreads that Bindâ, and the most impressive thing is that every one not only makes sense, but is vital and necessary in its own way. The planning invested by Hatzopoulou in the structuring of this novel is nothing short of breath-taking, because I was either excited or angry or gobsmacked or hopeful with every new chapter. And don't even get me started on the fairness of representation in 'Threads that Bind': LGBT readers (especially LGBT women/girls), you are safe with this one. In fact, Hatzopoulou is remarkable for her awareness of equality all-round in this novel.
I am brimful of superlatives for âThreads that Bindâ because I really couldnât have wished for anything more from this novel. It satisfied my reading tastes perfectly, and fulfilled my expectations in a surprising way (I suppose I should have known it would be just my cup of tea, because that cover art is gorgeous - exactly what I look for in a book cover!).
My thanks to the author and Penguin Random House UK Childrenâs for the chance to review an advance copy via NetGalley.
[EDIT] Oh, and goes without saying that I can't wait for the next installment of the series; the ending is fantastic. There's a lot of the novel that's quite cinematographic visually, and the ending is no exception!

Why, oh why did I let this wonderful book just sit beside me for the past 8+ weeks instead of reading it immediately?
Here's a snippet of the synopsis:
"In a world where the children of the gods inherit their powers, a descendant of the Greek Fates must solve a series of impossible murders to save her sisters, her soulmate, and her city."
The MC, Io, uses her powers to enhance her work as a private investigator. She quickly stumbles on a series of murders and is hired by a mob boss to figure out who is behind the crime.
