I’m sorry if this offends anyone, but man I can’t stand her attachment to MMC. I feel like every other paragraph is her thinking he’s hot. I’m not big into romance and to me, that seems like the main genre of this book despite the main plot being something else. I feel like if the story wasn’t so focused on their relationship and more on the plot, it would be a very interesting book. This book is not for me though
medium-paced
Set in a futuristic society ravished by climate change as a punishment by the gods Io is a descendant of the fates and is a detective in the Silts. Those who are descendants of the gods are treated as lesser citizens, and Io attempts to unravel a mystery involving an abduction that turns into a wraith attack.
The story becomes a fascinating twist of political intrigue, mythology, plots of revenge and detective fiction. The world building by Hatzopoulou is absolutely fascinating, it took my about 75 pages to get to grips with the world but after I think this is one of my favourite twists on mythology. It was complex and fully fleshed out. For a YA book the world building was excellent. The writing style was evocative and she describes the internal dynamics of each character beautifully.
The fate thread was an interesting extra, but not the focus of the book which I did enjoy. The twist ending was performed exceptionally and sets the next book up perfectly. I cannot wait for book two to see where Io goes next.
This book was a whirlwind I really enjoyed the characters and the plot and holy crap that twist at the end! I didnt expect my self to enjoy the romance trope in this book (fated mates) as much as I did but I loved Io and Edeis chemistry. I will say that I am Just missing the emotional spark that pulls at my heart and while I know its a good book it might take the sequel before I truely fall in love in the end 4.5 ⭐️
