Very intrigued by the premise, but got a little bogged down by YA romance. The type of book that engaged me and I would read the sequel right away if it was available, but the first one probably won't stick with me enough to remember it by the time the second is published. Would certainly recommend to a YA audience though.

I honestly wasn’t sure how I would feel about this book but I am so grateful this was a FairyLoot pick because otherwise I may not have read it. I absolutely loved everything about this book. The world is so unique, the magic system fascinating, the mystery keeps you turning pages, and the characters are perfect.

Threads that Bind was a good read. I found the idea of this world so interesting. Descendants of gods, always siblings, have different powers. The sad part is the other-born are discriminated against and are often blamed for things that are not their fault. Io is a moira-born, which means she's a descendant of The Fates from Greek Mythology. She's a "cutter," so she can cut the threads that every person has, leading to things they love. It was also fascinating to see that this wasn't just focused on Greek Mythology. Immigrants from other countries are descendants of their native gods. I liked that multiple pantheons were included.

It took me a bit to realize that this world is set on Earth, but after a devastating event that split the moon into three. I feel some worldbuilding should have been explained more upfront. Mostly, it was easy to follow along with how this particular world works. The mystery of the wraiths and the ultimate culprit was something I did not see coming.

Io is a complicated character who grows throughout the book. She has to face many of her own childhood issues and stop running away from them. Her relationship with her sisters is complicated and feels so real. I liked how she had to process all of that while trying to solve the mystery of these murders and face some hard truths.

The love interest was not very fulfilling for me. I didn't really care much about the will-they, won't-they aspect of her relationship with Edei. I understand her angst and complicated feelings for him, but I wasn't that invested in seeing it work out. Rosa, though, is an awesome side character, and I wish we'd gotten to see more of her.

I am looking forward to the next book because this one ended rather abruptly. There isn't an actual conclusion, and I want to see what happens next.

I originally acquired this because of the pretty edgework and cover art. It took me almost a year to read it but I finally did thanks to a buddy read.

The concept is intriguing: a world where the "otherborn" have powers and can pull up a quilt and alter the fabric of the bonds between people, control their emotions, or put them under thrall. This is more fantasy than romance; it's a murder mystery with humans, otherborn, demigods, and the undead in the cross mix, and an us-versus-them humans vs mutants mentality not dissimilar from X-Men. I truly enjoyed the system of magic that Hatzopoulou crafted, where the Or sisters are able to weave and cut the threads of fate binding all living and non-living things to each other.

In the last quarter of the book, the pacing upticks significantly and some plot maneuvers happen during a dream state. Things got really trippy, with some twists that leave us on a cliff hanger...although I wanted more from the last 20%, I didi find the magic unique and captivating overall. The sequel, Hearts that Cut, is slated for publication next month, June 18.

Couldnt get into the world building. It was too confusing. Honestly, there's both too much and not enough backstory that is being brought with the gods and their offspring that it's confusing. It would make more sense to have started the book off giving an explanation of the gods, offspring and powers before getting into the main story rather than sprinkling it in in bits and pieces that make little sense.

The characters seemed good, and I was seeming to enjoy the basic story...But the confusing world building just put me off that I could not keep going. I had no idea what she was talking about or how their powers or magic was used and it killed it pretty early on for me.

3.5 stars.

I have been really impressed with this streak of unique YA/NA fantasy stories. Even though I didn't necessarily LOVE this book, I really appreciated the world building and the unique fantasy concept. I have never really heard of a series based off descendants of the Furies so it was pretty interesting and I give this book points for uniqueness in world building. I absolutely plan on continuing the series and I liked the cliffhanger that it left on. I was wanting more, but wasn't furious with the fact that it was a cliffhanger.

The story was fast-paced and I liked the characters, but I think that I just could not fully connect the relevance of the story. There were multiple threads (pun intended!) of plot interwoven (the Wraiths, city politics, gang politics, Bianca, the war that happened 12 years before, etc.) and though I enjoyed the complexity and the twists and turns, some of it felt kind of far-fetched and/or underwhelming to me. For example, the big reveal that Bianca is that certain type of Other-born (I listened to the audiobook, so I don't know how to write the word of what power she has), I literally didn't care and it really didn't do much in the story. I was kind of like....okay? And this connects to the main story because? Also, I am kind of unsure of what her powers actually entail. It seems like mind control? Maybe I just wasn't paying attention to that part in the audiobook. I also guessed the twist that Thais was behind the Wraiths, but I was surprised that Ava was in on it too. That caught me by surprise and I'm much more interested in the future sibling dynamic that's going to be expanded upon.

Damn it! I did not go into this aware that it was part of a series. Now I have to wait. Fascinating world. I am all in. Some of the world building is done a bit weirdly, there's one instance where the main character just straight up explains a bit of the city's history to another character (who would obviously know it), but given everything else I can forgive some of the clunkier stuff.
