4.3 AVERAGE

vague, meandering plot. vague, monstrous enemies. only one main character out of like six had anything resembling character development. i don't know man. i'd be willing to like ferro and logen and maybe even glokta as characters if they were given anything of substance to do. what even was the point of glokta's dagoska storyline?

i should dnf but i have a weird itch to finish this trilogy now.

Okay, now we're getting somewhere. I really liked the developments in this one as compared to the first book in the series. I really liked the character combos in this one. West with the Dogman and the boys was a huge and delightful surprise. Logen's relationships with Jezal and Ferro were also great. I liked that this book felt like equal amounts of pay off from the first book and set up for the next one. I am very excited to start with the last one in the trilogy.

I think I have all the same praises and criticisms of this book as I do of the first in the series. The characters are so interesting and the world has be hooked, but it was a slow book with a lot of words to describe not a lot in the grand scheme of things. I just wish that the books told more of a self contained complete story in addition to building on each other. Right now it feels like they *only* build on each other.

Writing is really top notch in some places, but the author is also obsessed with describing everyone's mouths at all times. And in a book with as many words as this I just don't think I always need to know what everyone's mouth is doing.

However, all said, if you enjoyed the first book, you should like this one as well. The progression of the characters is good, but just feels incomplete.
