This was so much better than the first book. The Blade Itself was good and I did enjoy it, but I think I was partially pressuring myself into doing so because of how popular this series is. But Before They Are Hanged was ACTUALLY good, no gaslighting involved. Here are some bullet pointed thoughts about this book that I am too lazy to turn into paragraphs:
- I would tell Jezal to go screw himself but he is probably just going to do that anyway
- Ardee is cool. I like it when she kicked that guy. She deserves better than Jezal
- Prince Ladisla is an arsehole and deserved everything he had coming for him
- I have found the perfect combination of characters to describe Glokta: Fagan from Oliver Twist and House from House M.D. Just think about it. It’s perfect.
- I liked Logen and Ferro together until That Scene but if I just block it out then theirs were some of the best parts of the book.
- I don't support capital punishment but for Sult I'd make an exception
- Okay so Jezal kind of improved. I still hate him and think he’s an arse but he improved. People do need to keep all mirrors and shiny surfaces away from him though because my dude cannot stop checking himself out
- Logen deserves to be happy. The Bloody Nine can rot in hell but Logen himself should get a happy ending
- Also did Jezal really want to get in Logen's pants or am I just imagining it
- Glokta did cool things. Also that girl was freaky
- Abercrombie doesn't write female characters very well. They are mostly just objects for the male characters to react to, or they're evil/dead. It was fine, I wasn't to bothered by it and it didn't affect my rating, but after the first few instances I started to notice a pattern.
- I complained that the first book didn't give much information in regards to the magic/world. This one had so much more detail in that area and it made me very happy
