This has been an unique series for me in how I've processed the books. It is more brutal and gritty than I really like to read but them Ambercrombie does a good job of using that darkness to ask powerful human questions of guilt, redemption, friendship, and leadership. I think I can think about those questions in less brutal ways tho. The finish also fell a bit flat and I didn't come away feeling the need to read the final of the trilogy really.

Great sequel! Glokter is such a fun “bad guy” to follow, and I love Logan’s mini-game of bringing the party together (which you know he did with his named men back in the day). You get to see all the elements, the inside of a conspiracy and siege, a terrible land war in winter, and a straight up D&D party in a quest. So fun!
4.5 stars. Rounded up for GR. Audiobook.
You all were right! I was quite underwhelmed by The Blade Itself, but everyone told me that Before They Are Hanged is where I would fall in love with the series, and this rang true!
I couldn't stop listening to this audiobook for the life of me, and I feel much more invested in both the characters and plot than I did before. I also chuckled out loud more than once so the famous Abercrombie humor also started to show through for me.
Excited to get to the third installment in the series!

Just finished Before They are Hanged and it continues to be great. I thought it was better than the first for sure. Hopefully the finally is just as good if not better for this trilogy. My favorite arc was Glotka in Dagoska and was delighted to see what happened to Prince Ladisla. Will definitely be getting the the rest of the First Law world books asap.
