I'm really happy that Carriger got to write more in this series! She takes on some of most tired, silly tropes of the genre and somehow, magically, makes them fresh and interesting again. Most of it is the writing, which is excellent. I've been reding a lot of romance lately, both m/f and m/m, and have started getting a bit jaded when it comes to the romance and the sex, but Carriger manages to skirt around all the clichés and make it engaging and vivid.

The plot is fairly simple and predictable, and for some reason the only (very slight) mystery is spoiled by the title, which made me wonder why it took so long for the book to get around to it. Nor are the characters particulary complex, but they still feel real to me, and even though the feelings between the two MCs happen more or less instantly, it didn't annoy me the way "insta-love" sometimes does; instead it came across as really powerful attaction (which, incidentally, is one of the things that I liked about the first book in the series). There is a way to do those simple things right, and Carriger manages that.

Also, I'm a sucker for the found family theme, and this certainly qualifies.

Looks like there will be a third book as well, which makes me happy!
