i like reading people's descent into madness, but when it's from the perspective of the person Driving them to madness??? now that's just a good book.

I expected this novel to carry the same gothic tones as Jane Eyre, so my disappointment may have been on me. But it was totally underwhelming as a novel meant to pay homage to such a foundational work of literature. The characters were not real to me, Antoinette in particular. She and Mr. Rochester were colorless protagonists. I say “protagonists” because the novel oscillates between their viewpoints (in a most confusing manner) and I still cared nothing for either of them. The prose was just too abstract, and Nr. Rochester totally out of character, lacking the depth and complexity that he had in Jane Eyre. They ALL lacked complexity. I don’t understand how this book is considered so literary and amazing.
