Another great book from Ashley Gardner. In this one Captain Lacey unexpectedly comes across his wife and grown daughter in Berkley Square. It appears that James Denis has taken it upon himself to bring the small family to London in order to help Lacey facilitate divorce proceedings. Lacey is also asked to look into the matter of the disappearance of two "game girls". No sooner that the plot has begun, but Lacey's daughter Gabriella disappears as well.

Although the endless searching became a little tiresome, I enjoyed entering again the world of Captain Lacey. I was a bit worried mid-way through the book when he and Grenville have a bad argument; I was sure their friendship was at an end, which would have been a shame. Luckily it was patched up, and surprisingly Lacey and Colonel Brandon managed to begin some repair of their own friendship, which was nice. I was a little disappointed not to read more about Gabriella, since she disappeared quite early in the book.

I'm so glad this series is being published as ebooks, otherwise I might never have been able to read them. I very much look forward to the next installment.

-4 stars. i like this series.

"it was telling that the two people he claimed to like best, myself and marianne, were the two people who did not stand in awe of his powers. both of us, coming from very different walks of life, had seen too much and experienced too much to fear grenville's scorn. he found us baffling, and therefore, fascinating."

"i must learn to control my expression."
"you never will. you convey your exact thoughts, which is a reason people trust you. you never say one thing and think another."

summary: captain lacey's wife and daughter are back in london after 15 years, and she wants a divorce, and so does he. lacey's daughter disappears and it could be related to the disappearance of other girls around covent garden.

London 1817 and Captain Lacey comes face to face with his estranged daughter. His wife and daughter having returned to England to discuss a divorce.
Lacey is asked to investigate the disappearance of several 'game'girls just before his own daughter disappears.
I continue to enjoy this series.

A lot of the relationship and emotional interaction in the series are cleared up in this book. Along with some intresting rollercoster events that pulled at my heart alittle at times. But there a lot of resolve I loved in this book. Along with falling in love with some more minor characters I have truely come to love. All around a really great installment in the series.

I have really gotten involved in this series and like how the many characters are growing. This one introduced the runaway Mrs Lacey and the Captain's daughter. I have to say that the story developments about the various people ended up bring more interesting than the actual mystery but I was happy with that.

This started slowly for me (though interesting), but by the middle of the book I was thoroughly gripped and couldn’t put it down. I need to go back and start at the beginning of the series.

Another enjoyable book in the Captain Lacey series. I'm looking forward to reading the next one. Some of the characters I found annoying in past books improved in this one, and I really like finding out new information about all the characters. I'm glad Lacey's daughter finally made an appearance in this book too.
