I have so many words after this, but none would come close to how beautiful any one of the chapters are in this book.
Instead, a few thoughts:
- I was moved by how open and soft Roxane Gay’s voice was as she read such formidable words.
- Chapter 41 was so stunning I would have it tattooed on my skin.
- This book contains some of the most poignant critical commentary on fatphobic culture I have ever read.
- Gay is at once graceful and broken, honest and guarded. She is all of us.

Moderate: Body shaming, Eating disorder, Fatphobia, Misogyny, Racism, Rape
So achingly intimate it is at times a tough read (listen), but so beautifully written and thought provoking.
Raw, honest and harrowing. Gay tells her life story and the horrific incident that changed her forever. Her pain is palpable and so is her courage. Throughout the book, she details her struggle to exist as a plus sized woman. Yet Gay is often on both sides of the argument. She is a champion for the rights of fat people, but she is consumed with shame about her body. She is angered by discrimination and fat phobia, yet she often remains silent when she is disrespected. She yearns to be healthy and comfortable in her body, but fights against attempts to get there. She writes hauntingly of her torments and I feel her pain. I pray she finds her peace.
This memoir does not hold back, and yet it does. Gay’s experiences and choices are her own, and yet they’re familiar. Although she continues to say that we should not see her as brave, I disagree. It takes great courage to be that self-aware and to share that honesty with an audience.

Roxane Gay is a very good writer. I imagine it took a lot of courage to write such a memoir. It is difficult to read at times and sometimes it feels like you are reading diary entries of someone in a lot of emotional pain and in a state of psychological impotence. Her trauma seems to have put a lifelong strain on her psyche and her body. It is a thought provoking book and worth a read, but it’s far from a light read, although the pace is fast.

While I have the utmost respect for Ms. Gay and her willingness to share, I just couldn't get into this book. Ms. Gay's writing style is so repetitive that I lost interest and put it down.
