There's a couple of real great stories in here. If nothing else, really makes you want to read Sedaris' later stuff.
3.5 stars. Not as polished as his more recent material but I still recommend listening.
Written before Sedaris the author had fully settled on Sedaris the character but displaying occasional glimpses of the biting wit we'd come to know and love, this collection of essays and short stories covers familiar, but uneven, ground. I was curious to read his fiction, but during the stories I found myself counting pages until the next essay. At least in the case of the eccentric, one-of-a-kind Sedaris family, fact proves stranger -- and definitely more entertaining -- than fiction.
Overlooked Sedaris. Funnier than "Naked," although you don't really recognize it as his voice -- the writing style had not yet developed into what it was in "Me Talk Pretty" and what you're used to in the New Yorker.
The audiobook I listened to was apparently an abridged version which is disappointing - it was missing Santaland Diaries completely and I don’t know how many other stories. Still an entertaining listen but I wish I’d known going in that it was missing the best story!

I’m a pretty big Sedaris fan but this missed the mark for me. I find his short stories pale in comparison to his essays, and the fiction (in this volume, at least) to be crass and unspirited. But it’s still zany in the trademark Sedaris way and I do see the appeal of it.
