This was a magical experience. I truly wish it would not end.
I have no words good enough to summarise my experience reading this novel, but I have to say this: I will never forget Addie LaRue!

Ugh this book! Some say it is hard to get started, that the beginning is slow, for me it wasn’t at all but I can see how it would be to some. The beginning few chapters aren’t the same vibe and feel as the other chapters so people can get easily turned away from the book but push on! It’s an amazing book. I haven’t cried at the ending 2/3 of a book in quite a while. The writing was phenomenal, I keep thinking and thinking about it. Addie LaRue is a book I’ll think of forever and I can see myself reading many many times again.

really liked the book but thought that some “flashbacks” were kinda boring.the second half of the book was way catchier…
i wasn’t the biggest fan of the main couple/the plot of the male love interest but thought that especially the last third that focused on the relationship between luc and addie through the years was very interesting because he’s such a diverse character.
didn’t expect the “real” ending and i don’t know what i think about it

Somehow, despite an interesting premise and pretty writing, this felt a little flat to me. Trite? Or self-absorbed?

This was truly amazing I cannot recommend enough. I finished on January 25. 2022 but I would be shocked if this isn’t in my top 5 favourites of the year

It’s so close to 4, and was such an entertaining and engaging read. The story itself was really romantic and sentimental, and I found the characters to be super charming. I cannot fault it for that. The writing has a great lyrical vibe to it which is very VE Schwab.

However, the entire time I kept thinking of how much more of higher stakes things would’ve been, or rather far more understandable (re selling you soul) if Addie were POC woman in yee old times of 1714. I could completely sink into the plausibility of wanting to make a deal with the devil for freedom and time if this were the case.

Also—how can one be 300+ years old and the only places you’ve been able to see is (some) of western Europe and the US? With all that time one would at least entertain a visit to anywhere in Asia.

Then to speak on the topic of addie as a character herself—I thought she read too modern, with her complaining about corsets and stays like she knew of an alternative. It took me out of the time period because it felt more to the tune of a modern person time travelling backwards.

Would defs read again for ~romantic vibes~.

This book had all the makings of becoming a great read... Hyped beyond belief on different platforms, beautiful cover, enticing themes. That's why I was really excited, when I finally found the time to tackle this story. But that excitement visibly diminished with each chapter read.
I completely adore the basic plotline. A young girl making a Faustian deal in order to create her own story. Joining a character in exploring the world one era at a time. Tragic love stories, self discovery, magic. This could have been so incredible.
But the way it was written turned out to be a total let down for me. I almost had to force myself to keep going. Repeatedly thinking that complete chapters did nothing to further the storyline or character development. And there was a lot of room for character development because to me personally, the characters fell flat.
I wasn't invested in their destinies. Couldn't care less if they got a happy ending or not.
I understand why so many people liked it. It is a really cute story. I just couldn't seem to connect with the style it was written in, but I can definitely see what attracted people to it.
