This book has been sitting on my shelf since last May.
That is TEN MONTHS I delayed myself from enjoying this absolute masterpiece by Daniel Black.
I started this YESTERDAY and finished by mid morning today. I did a combo of physical book & audiobook - the audiobook is SO well done, really adding an emotional punch to Black’s already extremely gut wrenching prose. It is incredible the amount of depth packed into such a short novel; I finished the book and immediately turned back to the author’s note at the beginning & just found myself in tears 😭❤️
This is one of the best books I’ve ever read, easily. It explores the concept of masculinity and manhood, specifically Black masculinity and manhood, in a way I’ve never seen done before. It also deeply examines how the trauma from slavery/Jim Crow is felt through generations, and also influenced the concept of manhood for Black men. All of that, and it also addresses how past generations can sometimes become embittered toward younger generations for having the freedom and opportunities that weren’t available just a few decades before.
I am astonished at how deeply vulnerable this book is; I am grateful for Daniel Black allowing us to come on this journey of healing with him. I cannot recommend this highly enough.
