Absolutely incredible read. Daniel Black had me so emotional almost right from the start. This is a novel that reads like truth. This is written in essentially a long form letter from dying father to estranged son. The father has grown and changed in so many ways, but shame and regret and hopelessness keep him from reaching out. This is about the experience of black men in America, about father's and son's, about what it means to "be a man", about generational trauma, and also the hope for change. My heart is broken thinking about Daniel Black who wrote this and I hope this was ultimately healing for him.
I think THIS is the book our kids should be reading in schools. I'm sure it would be banned for various reasons, but all the more powerful that makes it I think.

Incredible! I binge read in a few hours. My favorite read of the year so far. Absolutely heartbreaking but left me feeling hopeful. Absolutely recommend!!
A perfect book for when you are looking to get just. absolutely. destroyed. AHHH. The whole thing is completely devastating and soo brilliant. The author’s note at the beginning of the book makes it more impactful in my opinion; keeping the catharsis in mind while reading heightened my emotional connection with the story, knowing it mirrors the author’s lived experiences and lingering grief. I hope it brought him peace. The letter format and singular perspective allows for nuance, suspense and unanswered questions. It is hard to believe that the mindsets and beliefs shared by main characters in this book are simply 1-2 generations apart; I clearly picture Isaac & his partner gentle parenting their surrogate babies and completely breaking the cycle. We will never know what became of Isaac but this is what I believe happens. I need to know Isaac from his own mouth, now this is a sequel I’d like to manifest. Aaahh. I’m haunted & enchanted by these characters and this story, and will not soon forget it.
