4.5, so I rounded up ❤️
Lovely. Sweet. Poignant.
Love the writing ❤️

Certainly not as charming as Major Pettigrew and I really thought I was not going to like it at the beginning, but it ended up better than it started.
I so wish I could give this 3.5 star status. The first 250 pages of the book fall solidly into the 2-star category--plodding and somewhat dull, characters barely probed and superficial. But the second half of the book is wonderful, thoughtful, sad and tragic with a rush of action that almost brutally peels back layers of characters to reveal things the first half of the book almost visibly struggled to conceal until the right moment. I'm glad I struggled through the first half, the second half being worth it, but I probably only did so out of hope that the author of one of my favorite books had another great one in her. It's good, but not great.

Maybe it just wasn't the right time for me to read this book, but I just felt meh about the whole thing. There were too many little plots threads that could have been interesting had they been developed more, but altogether just felt like they unraveled.
Daniel is the most interesting character in the book, but I didn't care for the way his storyline went.
The whole book just felt overly long. It was just an okay read.

Now I want to rewatch Downton Abbey!
I wanted to like this story, but all that comes to mind is "plodding". Maybe it's just me, but I need a plot to move on, past bucolic descriptions and this just didn't. So, I'm at the point in my life where, if a story isn't interesting, I close it down and find something else.
