This book was a little slow to get going but once it did I enjoyed it thoroughly. Had me laughing and crying and it was wonderful to read poetry.
As with many others, I didn't enjoy this book as much as Major P, but I thought it was still good. I didn't really care about the characters and the story was just ok until the last 1/4 of the book, which was much better.

This book took me awhile to finish because it wasn’t exactly light reading and it was a bit slow at the start. It has very good character and world building and when I got into it I at times felt as if I was there. It was heart warming and emotional at times and I came to love the characters and had a true interest in their stories.

Just as charming as the author's other book, [b:Major Pettigrew's Last Stand|6643090|Major Pettigrew's Last Stand|Helen Simonson|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1320539020l/6643090._SX50_.jpg|6837577]. The back cover makes a note that this book is perfect for fans of Downton Abbey, and I cannot agree more. If you want a nice, happy read, I highly recommend this book!

This was a very uneven book. There were too many story lines, the reader was introduced to characters and never learned the true relationship of them, story lines were dropped, and we never learned what finally happened to those characters.
However, when working with the main characters, the writing was evocative and lovely. Quotations by characters such as "Come on up.. Only if you faint, we won't be able to catch you without smearing brains on your frock" are wonderful to read. I wish I had more of the interactions between the main characters, with a few of other stories removed.
I ended up skimming the final half of the book, but ending was powerful, and made reading the book worth it.
