I wanted so badly to enjoy this book. The setting, the characters, and even the storyline were lovely, but the book itself was just so slow to read. One of the reviews on the cover listed the book as leisurely British fiction, and honestly I couldn't think of a better descriptor. Definitely a slow read and if that's your cup of tea, then you may enjoy this period piece.
For a book covering a relatively short period of time, this is a bit of an epic work. If you are going to/need to rush it, just save it for another time! The characterization is great, the story is engaging, and for being a book about a devastating war, I wasn't completely devastated at the ending (only partially devastated :) )I want to see a BBC miniseries out of this- because there's so much going on and there isn't enough room to explore everything- my only complaint.

The first 2/3 of this book were averaging about 2.5 stars due to painfully slow pacing but the last third really picked up and came together nicely.
I confess I'm surprised at the praise this book gets.
While it was well-written and had illustrative prose, it was also long-winded and very slow to start (I wanted to give up on it so many times!).
In summation, I would say this book is "okay". It didn't amaze me and I didn't find it lived up to the hype.

I was so excited to find out that the author of Major Pettigrew had another book. I listened to it on audio but eventually gave it up and abandoned it. It just dragged on and I kept finding my mind wandering. Too many books to read to waste time on less than enjoyable ones, right?
Great Period Novel
I really enjoyed this book! Happened to pick it up by chance because I needed something to kill the time on a car trip. The plot is somewhat predictable after the first quarter, but still manages to be an engaging page turner, especially in the last quarter.

Started a little slow, but by about 100 pages in, it started getting really engaging. Not what I expected when I picked it up, but by the end it had me crying. Enjoyable summer read!
