I want to read this book because I finished major Pettigrew and I enjoyed it so much

Begins as a conventional British period novel, full of witty dialogue and party set pieces but moves into a deft portrayal of how class and gender conventions changed (or didn't) when Britain entered WWI.

4.5

This book was meticulously researched and read like it was written a hundred years ago (in a good way).

Loved the wit of the book’s dialogue and the satire of early 20th century English class structure. Some reviews criticize the books length but I enjoyed the leisurely prolonged visit with these characters.

I read somewhere that this book was great for people who missed Downton Abbey and I think that was a good tip.

I'm always pleased with a smart, independent woman and Beatrice was no different. I enjoyed the goings on of the small English town in the run up to WWI.

Town politics, romance, scandal, war.....it's all here.

Sweet story, rich characters, including the women leads.

This book had been on to be read list for a long time! so when my copy finally came i was excited to started i hadn't read a historical fiction in a while and was hoping this hit the spot! but truthfully i couldnt get into this book, i found i had to re read alot of pages feeling like i was lost and i couldnt follow the story line. the characters seemed like they could of been really interesting but i couldnt take to any of them.

Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

A beautiful little snapshot of the last days of the Edwardian period and the social upheaval of WWI, with characters that feel very real in all their good qualities and petty flaws. The writing vivid, but it’s the characters that really make the story — they think and act exactly like people from 1914 might think and act, and yet they feel like people you could meet today.

A whole lot of not much happens in the first half of the book, and some of the writing felt a bit stuffy in its attempts to be true to the time. However, the characters for the most part were witty and compelling, so I pushed through and was rewarded with a strong and emotional final third of the novel. Although I do wish I could read more about Alice and Minnie, who are obviously lesbians.
