I expected so much more from this book. I loved Major Pettigrew's Last Stand and hoped for something as good. This didn't deliver. It was an okay read but the characters didn't grip me the way I wanted them too. Maybe someone without the expectation I held would have a better opinion but I felt this just fell short.

Character-driven historical fiction set in England before World War I. Enjoyable froth of humorous quips and meet-cutes on top of some cutting scenes of misogyny and xenophobia. By the end, the social climbing and scheming drama is entirely replaced with horrific scenes of battle and front line surgery. I admired the balance of love story and tragic loss - even though the developments of the love story and the tragic losses were fairly predictable, they rang true.

So I didn't love this book or hate this book It was a VERY slow start with just a ton of characters I am very surprised that the writer could keep track of them all and effectively tell a story It did evoke emotions and I enjoyed it but it wasn't a page turner by any means
slow-paced

I have so many feelings associated with this! I would definitely recommend this one!

DID NOT FINISH: 8%

took way too long to get into any kind of story or relationship or conflict, wasn't drawn to any of the characters, i guess i just dont like slow paced novels. also i'm just not a fan of the writing style

Not my usual type of book but something drew me to it, I'm so glad it did. Brilliant read, very emotional.
