the goosebumps series is extremely formulaic and a majority of the time, the formula works. this was almost not one of those times. to that effect, i completely blame adulthood for giving me a more discerning eye.

say cheese and die is one of the books in the series i was dying (haha) to get to but it just didn’t live up to my expectations in regard to how exciting or different it would be. the spooky factor and tension were extremely high in this one so that saved it for me. however, it began to feel the same all over again, from the repeated false jump scare moments to the same endings where you know it’s not really over and something’s still fishy.

 I recently got a bit of the nostalgia bug when thinking back to the Goosebumps books I read as a kid. Goosebumps, and by extension the Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark series, definitely introduced me to the genre of horror. After Goosebumps I moved onto classics like Dracula and Jekyll/Hyde, then on to the gown up stuff throughout my life and to this day. Well, this nostalgia bug got me wanting to re-collect the original 62 run of Goosebumps books, and in their first run printings because of the amazing covers. Perhaps the best part of the series was the covers. Next up;
#7 Say Cheese And Die!
Another good horror filled Goosebumps book, this one is fueled by a junior version of a prophesy mechanic. When Greg and his friends discover a strange camera hidden within an abandoned building, they soon discover the pictures they take develop strange and twisted. The photos' subject appear hurt or endangered, as if the camera is predicting a horrible fate of its subjects. Is the camera predicting the future? Or is it creating the future? It's up to Greg to find out.
This entry in the Goosebumps series has one of the most iconic covers, one of the ones that first drew me into them at that age. Plenty of mystery, predictions, and foreboding dread to go around.
One strange thing though; in the book, the evil camera just looks like a normal camera, except you can't open it or break into it in any way. No seams or ports. Just a camera that could pass as any other camera. But in the Goosebumps tv series, this episode they chose to make the camera into some weird, big, toaster looking thing for some reason. Weird.
