This book truly embodies the American Dream and the American spirit more than most of the classics written by white men. Thank you Kelly Yang for sharing this story of courage, triumph, and the power of a letter writing campaign.

Fuck you Moms for Liberty and your unamerican attempts at banning free speech!

Really great immigrant story. Mia and her family move from China to Cali in the 90s. This follows them and their story of managing a motel.

Middle level. So many great things about this book - the plot, the complexity of the character’s, the conflict, and its themes. Would highly recommend.

This middle grade contemporary was fantastic! I have been trying to make sure that I am picking up some new MG series this year and this one came up pretty high on my list. I think that this is an incredible book for young people to read to get and realistic view of the Chinese immigrant experience and the truly horrific conditions that some face when moving to America. The author herself was a 1st generation immigrant who lived with her parents in a motel so this really does follow a lot of her lived experiences.

The book looks at slave labour, the horrors of loan sharks, police brutality and racism, and bullying in schools in a really approachable way, and it almost brought me to tears several times. The only reason why I marked it down a bit is that I felt that I had to suspend my disbelief quite a lot at the ending, but otherwise I think this is a brilliant book.
