There were pockets of passages that were great to read, but I was bored for the most part, which was disappointing because there’s a lot of good storytelling to be had in any mythological canons.

I’ve always been drawn to Greek mythology and deeply enjoyed Madeline Miller’s books and wanted to give this one a shot too. This was so much darker than I could have anticipated. It’s a fascinating story and held my interest, though it was a bit slow in the very beginning. My biggest qualm with this was a lack of content warning. Not everyone knows the myth of how and why Medusa was cursed.
There was a graphic depiction of sexual assault that I was unprepared for.
Regardless of this being fantasy, content warnings are essential.
I also found the character of Euryales so unlikeable which made it hard to read her chapters sometimes.

This was such a beautiful retelling of the myth of Medusa. It makes you fall in love with all the gorgons and morn for their life that was wrenched from them.

A beautiful and interesting and perspective on a mythology story that’s been told time and time again. Pleasantly surprising way of representing the story that incorporates old takes and new takes on the story of Medusa, weaving them together seamlessly. The feminist lens in an ancient time with an advanced society portrays how women and their innocence were both highly coveted and easily discarded by men (and gods). The story takes its time but allows you to learn more about the sister’s relationship, and through it, about Medusa as a tragic figure. Intermittently the upcoming demise of the young mortal is directly foreshadowed. Everyone knows Medusa turns into the fearsome Gorgon, and in this case that fact added suspense - knowing it was coming - rather than made the story feel predictable and boring.
