I find books that are part of larger franchises often comically bad or mediocre at the very best, so I was very pleasantly surprised by Kingston's foray into Doctor Who spinoff novels. I love River Song and was very pleased to read that Alex Kingston (a) understood the assignment and (b) understands her character inside and out. The audibook being read by her was just an extra bonus!
This book was funny, and full of unexpected twists and turns. At one point I thought we were wrapping up, and imagine my surprise when I still had 4 hours of audiobook left! "Where is this going?" I thought. Everywhere, was the answer. It got progressively more unhinged but in a way I found enjoyable and in keeping with TV canon. I have not, and am honestly slightly afraid, to delve into the vast sea of DW short stories and audio plays and assorted extra content, but thankfully this book kept those references to a minimum, or if it did it explained them well. It was extremely understandable for a TV-only fan, and being bouyed along by Kingston-As-River-As-Melody-As-[Spoilers!] was icing on the cake.
As other people have noted, for a debut book this is very good, and I was shocked at how good it was for a spin off. The fact Kingston lent into the chaos of River and time travel, and didn't get bogged down the complicated ~rules~ of Writing A Book, made this a win for me. It broke the mold just like River broke Doctor Who, and it did it in a way that made me wanting more. Let Kingston write more River books!

River has always been one of my favorite timelines and stories - this book was nothing short of perfect. I need 1000 more of her adventures, especially when they are authored by the very woman who portrayed her. 100/10!

It is so hard to read this book without a chuckle or at least a quirk of the lips every couple of pages. Alex Kingston seems to have written the entire book with a permanent smirk on her face and, I mean, would River Song realistically do any less?
