Esther is an unlikable person, the writing was interesting, but it was hard to stay super interested at the beginning as there wasn't a lot of redeeming goodness to her. She spoke poorly of everyone’s physical appearance in such a matter of fact way. Everyone was ugly, everyone was beneath her. The latter half of the book was more intriguing, brought me back around, but even then she was an unlikeable person. She did grapple with patriarchy and mental illness in a time where this was unheard of, but i think i need to sit on this one before I understand how I feel about the book.

I know she’s a product of her time, but a lot of racist phrases and turns of phrase were hard to get past for me. Pale as a sick Indian, as yellow as a chinaman… things like that. Not once. Not twice, a plethora.

The scene with Marco- I had no idea what was going on in that whole scene. Utterly baffled.  I couldn't figure out if it was her descent into her mental illness or i just legitimately missed something important. I felt this with one other scene in the book, felt like i was just suddenly there and couldn't figure out how i got there. Maybe a portrayal of the illness, or again, I just sped read and ended up somewhere else haha.

No se que decir. Me sentí identificada con la protagonista en varias ocasiones y eso hizo que el libro se hiciera mas personal. Esta escrito muy bello y no pude dejar de leerlo. Son de esos libros que te dejan pensando sobre muchos temas.
