Once again the zingers fly between March and Grice as they investigate a man taking advantage of young women. While I enjoyed the ongoing repartee of the 2 characters, I did find the multiple threads at the start of the book a bit clunky to keep track of. Also, this volume seemed darker than the others in the series.

Ho trovato difficile interessarmi alla storia contenuta in questo volume e ai suoi personaggi.
Non so se la cosa sia solo imputabile al libro di per sé, o anche alla mia stanchezza, ma non lo rileggerei certamente per scoprirlo.

The best book in the series, had more of a story even though it did jump about a bit. I wonder if this is the end or will there be more?

I've been thinking for a while that these books are the grimdark of Victoriana detective works and this instalment hammers that home. There are a couple of times in this book which made me feel the same as the torture scenes in the First Law trilogy.
However, mixed with that is a pretty obvious culprit, silly word-play with names from Holmes stories and recurring allusions to Jack the Ripper 4 years before those murders happened, presumably because the author assumes it's the only thing anyone cares about when reading crime set in Victorian London.
The ending is grim and depressing but riven with bathos.

4.5/5 My memory may be playing tricks on me, but this new addition to the series seems considerably darker than previous offerings. As good a story as always, though.
