I really enjoyed this classic novella.

It’s about a man who wakes up one morning to find that he has turned into a beetle, and given the subject matter, I was expecting it to be a bit dark and depressing.

However, it’s actually a surprisingly fun read. There’s a great sense of humour to the writing, the premise is absurd and the characters are all quite mad!

It is a tragic story too of course, and the subtext of the man’s difficult relationship with his family is very sad, but I found this to be one of the most readable classics, and in fact, as soon as I got to the end I started it again from the beginning straight away.

One of the saddest stories ever. For me, it read as an exploration of trauma and how isolating it can be. It also made me think about how difficult it is to try to put on a mask for others to show up for them, and what happens when it can't be done anymore.

A cute little story that added more depth than anticipated. I quite enjoyed it.
