I wanted to like this more, I really did. Lesbian Anne Rice vibes? Sounds amazing! Unfortunately, like much of Schwab's work (don't hate me...but I DNFed Addie La Rue), I feel like this book just isn't quite sure what it wants to be. It is objectively well written, and Schwab's prose is beautiful and well-constructed, but the question of what this story is ABOUT from a plot-standpoint is a difficult one to answer. Things happen, but for a 500+ page book, the pace is glacial. I enjoyed the writing from a craft level, but from a plot level I found myself often facing indifference.
Also...I hate to say it...but Alice's POVs were extremely boring to me. Every time we switch back to her, the pace of the narrative drags, and I feel literally tempted to skip ahead to the next POV switch.

I was taken in by the hype, unfortunately. Beautiful, gorgeous prose, but with very little substance. I was really bored.

loved this. my only complaint is that i didn’t feel super connected to alice - reading her flashbacks sometimes felt tedious, though i understand their purpose.
i found sabine and lottie’s portions the most interesting. i’m a simple girl, i see toxic lesbians and i’m satisfied! this was my first time reading a vampire novel, and while i was a little unsure about it prior to beginning, i really loved that element of it by the end.
