An interesting one. What an interesting take on vampires. I loved all the characters and their toxic dynamics. It truly felt like an exploration of what it is to be human and who we should interact with others.
But also, this is basically Addie take 2. A similar concept with characters living long lives.
I really liked that it wasn't exactly what you thought it would be in terms of narrative. But I feel like a little bit more thought could have gone into making it work. Idk. Like it was so almost there with the shift from narrating Sabine to narrating Charlotte, but not quite.
I loved the overriding concepts and felt it dealt beautifully with the moral side of things. It was very grey in the best way.
But I also feel like the ending was a tad rushed. Idk.

For those of you who look at the vampire genre and think that there is a burning need for some toxic lesbian romance, this book is for you. It’s not typically my cup of tea, but the character analysis and interaction is well done. Schwab tends to do moments really well and her prose makes them cinematic.
Some of the character reflections will stick with me for a long time, particularly Charlotte’s reflection on the nature of the soul. I thought that was one of the more beautiful moments in the book. My major critique is that the plot feels a little directionless. It does come together in the end, but it takes a while to see how it comes together. I can imagine that would be hit or miss.

2.5 ✨
This novel read like a cheap version of Interview with the Vampire. The way Sabine mimics the ruthless madness of Lestat and Charlotte wines and wines trying to feel as conflicted and human as Louis were too forced, too obvious, too much.
Sabine could have been an interesting character but she falls flat right after the Venice scenes. Charlotte is slightly more interesting to me since she sometimes manages to show the hypocrisy of her humanness.
Still, having read Interview with the Vampire this novel felt utterly unnecessary and incredibly boring. It lacks the historical background and the actual gore and evilness depicted in IWTV, Sabine is soon repetitive in her mad rage and Charlotte becomes whiny instead of being actually conflicted and somehow redeemable.
This novel had potential, but it fell flat for me.
