V.E. Schwab is a brilliant writer and from that perspective, this book deserved 5 stars. You will feel immersed in the many settings and time periods this book spans and invested in the characters, despite their unlikable qualities. I liked that the book was centered on all lesbian characters and the journey through time and cities through the eyes of three different characters was cool. I would recommend the audiobook, which has fantastic narration.

I just couldn’t rate it any higher because it was too dark for me. I’m not one for dislikable characters and revenge, so I think this was just not the book for me. The vampires in this book do not pull any punches so there is a lot of death and psychological and physical violence. If you aren’t one for dark books, be prepared.
