Atmospheric and interesting but the characters fell a little short with me. I liked the ending but it wasn’t supremely satisfying

“But Maria has known all her life that she is not meant for common paths, for humble houses and modest men. If she must walk a woman’s road, then it will take her somewhere new.”
I don't think I have the patience enough to enjoy literary fiction. I like it when its over but while I'm reading it, I just want to like, get on with it. A long distance friend I don't always get along with.
Anyway, I almost didn't read this because despite the chatter a lot of reviews said it was slow and "JuSt vIBeZ" and I knew I would get bored. But I caved and here we are.
I don't regret reading this book. I think its addition to vampire lore is worthwhile. The sapphic, feminist angst version of interview with a vampire - with a twist.
Slow to get started, I did enjoy the middle. Sabine's story is dark, sinister and encapsulated what I love about vampire lore. A journey through the centuries losing all meaning of life and self.
But as we get into Lottie's story, the book became predictable and repetitive and drawn out for me. And Alice's story? It just seemed to float in the periphery of the story for no real reason except to play a role at the end.
Anyway, there were things I like and things I found to be boring. The prose are wonderful and the vIBeZ are great but overall this story was just ok for me.
“All things whither in the end”
